Belmont Academy Parliament

Democracy in Action

Belmont Parliament members are elected to represent the pupils in their class. All classes learn about the process of elections and take part in voting for their chosen representative. This is part of Belmont's commitment to promoting British Values and the children's understanding of democracy. They are involved in helping the leadership team in the school make important decisions. Their first job is to decide on their priorities for the year and to create a pledge for the school.

Members of Belmont Academy Parliament

We will shortly be revealing the names of our Belmont Parliament representatives.

  • Year 3 - Akain & Edie
  • Year 4 - Charlie & Isabella
  • Year 5 - Avni & Elsie May
  • Year 6 - Fraser & Zeliya

Each of our Parliament members has the opportunity to run for one of three key roles within Parliament; Chief Speaker, Treasurer and Secretary.  Parliament pupils had to prepare a manifesto detailing their suitability for the role and this was shared with the pupils during an assembly. Pupils then took to the ballot to choose their class Parliament representative.

Our pupil Parliament group meet regularly with senior leaders to discuss matters around school acting as the voice of the pupils.  They are also integral to our charity and fundraising events alongside acting as ambassadors for visitors and guests to our school.

Belmont Academy Captains

Young Leadership at Belmont

At Belmont, our pupils are encouraged to take on roles of responsibility throughout their time at the school. In Year 6, pupils are selected to become Captains:

  • House Captains
  • Music Captain
  • Sports Captain
  • Maths Captain

Belmont Houses

In Autumn term 2022, the whole school voted to select new House names based on famous authors. The new category of famous authors was selected by the previous captains.  Pupils being given their democractic right to vote for their own house names created a great buzz.

The four Houses were renamed:

  • Blackman (Malorie Blackman OBE - former Children's Laureate, writer of Noughts & Crosses, Pig-Heart Boy, Operation Gadgetman)
  • Dahl (Roald Dahl - arguably Britain's famous children's novelist, writer of The Twits, Fantastic Mr Fox, The BFG)
  • Rosen (Michael Rosen - former Children's Laureate, author and poet, writer of We're Going on a Bear Hunt, Chocolate Cake, Sad Book)
  • Zephaniah (Benjamin Zephaniah - author and poet, writer of Talking Turkeys, Windrush Child)

House Points are awarded to pupils for learning behaviours in class, exhibiting our school values and acting as role models for other pupils. Houses are used for competitive events such as competitive sports matches and sports day.

Captains

Each year, pupils are elected who are good role models to take on these roles. Captains are selected from Year 6.

This year's Captains are:

  • Blackman: Sidney
  • Dahl: Amelia
  • Rosen: Raj
  • Zephaniah: Sophia
  • Music Captain: Ava
  • Sports Captain: Jayden
  • Maths Captain: Mokshu
